A British pharmaceutical company has been fined £1.6m for illegally launching counterfeit pharmaceuticals online in a bid to protect public health.
Brenton Group, based in Bristol, said it had received a letter from the British Medicines Board (BMB) which warned it could be affected by counterfeit drugs being sold in the UK. It is seeking a refund of the amount it received in the first quarter of this year.

The company said the letter was intended to deter “unnecessary supply” of the fake versions of the anti-impotence drug.

The BMB said it had received a letter from Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, the company that developed and marketed Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The letter had warned Dr Reddy’s about the drug’s potential health risks to its patients, including the risk of developing cancer, a rare but serious condition, including heart disease.
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, based in Bristol, which is currently based inodies, had received a letter from the BMB which warned it had received a notification from the British Medicines Board in June warning that a drug sold by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories could be “dangerously addictive”.
A UK Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) spokesperson said: “This is part of the ongoing review into the pharmaceutical industry and should therefore be monitored closely.
“This is a precautionary measure.”
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, based in Bristol, has also received a letter from the BMB advising it to “reimburse” the amount it had received in the first quarter of this year.
The letter is designed to deter some pharmaceutical companies from offering counterfeit versions of the erectile dysfunction drug, which is made by Pfizer Inc. The company has also been fined £1.6m by BMB for selling the counterfeit version of Viagra on its website.
